Winkelmann going places
07 Apr 2017Trelawney Stud has enjoyed the careers of many top liners that it has bred, raced, or sold at auction, and the Danny O'Brien-trained Winkelmann (Rip Van Winkle x Crepe de Chine) may be the latest to join that list.

Although the win was in a 1600m Benchmark 64, it was the barnstorming finish of the Rip Van Winkle filly at Pakenham on Thursday April 6th against the older horses that was impressive.

"I was impressed with that performance as we were hoping to settle her closer to the speed, but (jockey) Damian (Lane) is the in-form jockey in the land and he went with Plan B after her slow getaway," O'Brien said.

"She won her maiden by leading and now that she has come from well off the speed to win her second race bodes well for her future. She has shown in her short career that she is quite versatile which will help her as she steps up in class."

The win was the three-year-old's second from five career starts and O'Brien said he believed the filly was also looking for 2000m at this stage of her preparation.

"We will keep raising the bar for her, but I expect that she can continue on her winning way which is exciting for (Trelawney's) Brent and Cherry Taylor, and the stable. She has a nice future."
