Spieth to skip William Reid
22 Mar 2017

Bryce Heys will resist the temptation of running Spieth (Thorn Park x Stella Livia) in Friday night's William Reid Stakes, with the young Sydney trainer preferring to wait for another target.

Spieth remained in Melbourne following his effort in the Newmarket Handicap but Heys feels his top-quality sprinter isn't quite ready to go back in to battle this week.

"He worked on Tuesday and it was a nice piece of work but I would like to give him another hit-out before we go to the races," Heys said.

"Given we didn't get the result in the Newmarket, I need to make sure he is right up to the mark the next time he competes."

The $2.5million TJ Smith Stakes, run at Randwick on April 1, seems a logical target for Spieth although Heys is wary of a wet surface.

"I wouldn't be keen to run him in the TJ on a heavy track," he said.

"The race looks suitable, weight-for-age, 1200m and at Randwick.

"But I don't want to race him on heavy ground so we will just see what the weather does."

Heys said the Brisbane winter carnival could come in to play if he was to bypass the TJ Smith Stakes due to the wet weather.
