Bryce Heys' immediate reaction to Spieth (NZ) (Thorn Park) drawing barrier one in Saturday's Newmarket Handicap wasn't positive, but Heys is far from kicking stones, as barrier draws are something he can't control and he has Australia's leading Group 1 jockey in Hugh Bowman engaged for the ride.
"If I had the option of choosing a barrier for Spieth, the inside wouldn't be my top choice," he said.
"He is a horse that needs room but you never know how the race will unfold, it may work out on Saturday.”
A field of 13 accepted for the A$1.25 million handicap, with weights raised 0.5kg to ensure a minimum top weight of 57kg.
Spieth returned to his Warwick Farm base following his second to Terravista in the Black Caviar Lightning but will be back in Melbourne on Thursday.
"He is right up to the mark, everything has gone to plan in terms of his preparation for this race, he has come through the first-up run as good as I could have hoped," Heys said. racing.com
