The lightly raced King’s Man (Iffraaj x
Ruqqaya) broke through for his maiden win on Saturday night at Sha Tin when
heading off a 14-strong field over 1400m.
The four-year-old was bred by Trelawney Stud
and is the first foal for Ruqqaya (Van Nistelrooy) who is a half-sister to Cox
Plate winner Ocean Park. King’s Man
failed to make his reserve when prepared for the Karaka sales but developed
into a nice Ready To Run type and was sold though Mana Park’s draft where he
was purchased by Ricky Yiu for $85,000.
King’s Man debuted in June this year where
he failed to fire after dislodging his jockey on the way to the barriers. This was followed up by another unsuccessful
run a month later, before it became evident Yiu had ironed out the kinks when
King’s Man ran third in a barrier trial in September.
Jumping well and settling midfield on
Saturday, King’s Man came from nowhere to storm to the front and cross the line
ears pricked, 1.2 lengths ahead of the field.
Ruqqaya was purchased by Cherry Taylor as a
yearling, and went on to win twice. She
has a three-year-old filly Addison (Jimmy Choux), a $90,000 yearling purchase
who has had one trial for Darren Weir. The two-year-old and yearling are both unnamed
O’Reilly colts, and she is in foal to Savabeel.
