Suavito (Thorn Park x Queen Cha Cha) is on a pathway towards running over her favourite track/trip - the 1400m at Caulfield - but trainer Nigel Blackiston believes she can still show her worth over longer.
The Thorn Park mare is an ever-consistent performer over seven furlongs at The Heath, winning each of the Group 1 Futurity Stakes and CF Orr Stakes.
Flemington horseman Blackiston is plotting to kick off Suavito's spring campaign via one of the Group 2 P.B Lawrence Stakes or the Group 1 Memsie Stakes - both tick the Caulfield/1400m box - and she may even run in both.
But Blackiston is also staunch in his belief his mare can get a trip yet, too, despite Suavito falling short in the G1 Australian Cup (2000m) last prep - with the trainer taking the blame for misplacing the horse third-up.
"Possibly it was my over-adventurousness jumping into 2000m with only two runs under her belt, especially after a long layoff," Blackiston said on Racing.com's Jury Duty on RSN 927.
"I certainly put my hands up there that it was the wrong thing to do.
"I think she does see the 2000m.
"She won the Matriarch Stakes a couple of years ago at Flemington, so it's quite a stiff 2000m.
"I'm not saying I won't try it [the 2000m] again, but I think seven furlongs to a mile definitely is her best trip. But she does see a nice 2000m out in the right company." -racing.com
