2016 Karaka update- December 11
11 Dec 2015

It has been a relatively quiet week for the yearlings.  We paraded for Kieran Moore on Tuesday, though the elements were not in our favour and the wind made it a bit of an unpleasant experience for all concerned.  We have had time to fit in some parade practice for the colts and are trying to give the yearlings some extra time out in the yards before it gets too hot and busy leading into sales time.

Meet Aussie import Jimmy Jones

Born: Bowral, NSW

Time Spent at Trelawney:  Three months, I arrived in August and will probably stay till after weaning.

How did you get involved with horses:  I grew up around stock horses, when I was 12 I went and worked with thoroughbreds at Boomerang Berrima Stud.  From there I have also worked at Rosehill Racecourse, Randwick Vet clinic, as a horse breaker, and most recently at Waratah Thoroughbreds.

Favourite part of yearling prep:  Educating the problem horses.

Least favourite part: Mucking out boxes.

Best horse you have been involved with to date: Breeders Cup winner London Bridge while at Waratah Thoroughbreds.

Interests outside of work: Polocross, socialising, racing.

If you weren’t working with horses you would be: A stockbroker

Pick of the 2016 Karaka Draft: Mastercraftsman x La Sizeranne

Yearlings of the week

Lot 267 Snitzel x Dubai Express filly

This filly is bred on a nick that works.  With an A+++ rating she joins the like of Samantha Miss, Shootoff, Abidewithme, and Fast ‘n’ Famous.  This is the fifth foal for Dubai Express who currently holds a 75% runners to winners strike rate.  One of these is the stakes placed Rockadubai (Fastnet Rock).  It is a strong female family with Irish Champion Sea Siren, the second top 2yo of her year Lady Dehere, and Gr.1 winner Hold That Smile all listed on the page.

This is an athletic filly with plenty of scope and looks a 3yo type.

Lot 391 O’Reilly x Martini Red colt

This colt comes from a family embedded in Trelawney history.  Martini Red was bred by Trelawney and raced by Faith Taylor and friends and is the fourth generation of the family to achieve black-type success being a Gr.3 winner.  The second dam Pernod was also bred and raced by Trelawney and is a Gr.1 winner.

This is a strong colt who stands well over ground and has nice bone and a willing attitude.  By champion sire O’Reilly, this horse ticks a lot of boxes; proven stallion, stakes winning mare, type, attitude, and we are pleased with his progress so far during the prep.
