2016 Karaka update- December 3
03 Dec 2015

We kicked off the week with another parade, this time for an Australian based group organised by Grant Morgan of Ontrack Thoroughbreds.  The weather held off for a late afternoon parade, followed by drinks and nibbles overlooking a paddock of mares and foals.  Ontrack Thoroughbreds provide racehorse ownership opportunities through syndication and have experienced success with the likes of Brazen Beau.  Multiple winner Elegant Machine was purchased by Grant from our 2012 NZB draft and hopefully they saw something they like from the current draft!

The yearlings had their feet trimmed on Tuesday, and are all having a bath at some stage during the week.

Yearlings of the week

Lot 51 Ocean Park x Ruud Van Slaats colt

This colt has been a stand out from day one and has developed into a strong, well-muscled horse and is a wonderful mover.  Pedigree wise this is a horse close to many hearts at Trelawney.  His sire, Ocean Park was bred and sold from the farm and went on to win five Group One races, including the Cox Plate.  This colt is from his first crop.

Ruud Van Slaats was also bred by Trelawney, she was a multiple Group Two winner and is proving to be an asset in the broodmare band.  Her first foal Smashing (Pins) has had four wins, the most recent when resuming at Te Rapa on November 25.  She races in the Trelawney colours and is a mare that holds an exciting future.  The second foal, 3yo Slumberland (Rip Van Winkle), races in Australia and has had two starts for two seconds.  The third foal is an unnamed 2yo Savabeel filly who made $350,000 at last year’s Karaka sale.

Lot 607 Ocean Park x Stella Livia colt

This is another from the first crop of Ocean Park.  He is another great mover, and has a definite ‘look at me’ quality.  He is a ¾ brother to Spieth (Thorn Park) who looks a promising prospect for Sydney-based expat Bryce Heys.  From three starts he has won one, was second on debut, and though he placed 7th in his most recent start, it was the Gr.3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude and was a solid effort where he was only 1.7 lengths off the winner.

The first foal from Stella Livia is 4yo mare Thrill (Flying Spur, who has had six starts for one win and two placings.
