2016 Karaka update- November 24
24 Nov 2015

The team has hit the ground running this week, with Anthony Mithen’s tour group coming through on Monday, and the NZTM hosted Australian trainer’s tour on Tuesday.  This is a great opportunity to showcase the farm to visitors and get the yearlings used to parading in front of larger groups.  Not only do our guests get to view the Karaka draft, but Brent takes them through the history of the farm, stopping by the grave stones of past Trelawney heroes, before viewing a selection of mares and foals.  Though it is only early in the prep the yearlings are parading well and everyone is pleased with their progress.

Meet our new recruit: Dylan Treweek

Dylan was the 2014 recipient of the NZTBA Irish National Stud scholarship and has recently joined the team for the sales prep.

How long have you been at Trelawney: 3 months

How did you get involved with horses: Most of my family have been involved with horses so I have been involved with them as long as I remember (Dylan’s parents are Mark and Shelley Treweek from the well-respected Lyndhurst Farm).

Favourite part of yearling prep: Sales

Least favourite part: Early mornings

Best horse you have been involved with to date: Invincible Spirit

Interests outside of work: Travelling and sports

If you weren’t working with horses you would be: Travelling

Pick of the 2016 Karaka draft: Lot 375 Choisir x Line of Flight colt

Yearlings of the week

Lot 343 Jimmy Choux x Keepa Cheval colt

Jimmy Choux has his first crop hitting the track this season and has experienced early success with stakes placegetters What Choux Want and Manolo Blahniq.

This is a well put together colt, with a nice length of rein and intelligent eye.  He is the third foal from a winning half-sister to champion 10 time Group 1 winner Mufhasa.  The first foal from the mare Vitesse (Makfi) has been placed in both her starts for Shanue Ritchie and holds a nomination for racing at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Lot 864 Iffraaj x Exquisite Choice (AUS)colt

Our second yearling of the week is another from a young member of the Trelawney broodmare band; the multiple winning Redoute’s Choice mare Exquisite Choice.  She is a half-sister to Stakes winner Riding Shotgun, who is shaping up to have another successful campaign.

This yearling is a well-balanced, athletic colt with a strong forearm.  He moves well and has a professional attitude.
